A spiced apple and plum chutney with a delicious tangy flavour. Make now and this can be stored for a beautiful homemade festive gift.
This recipe makes a small batch of 2-3 jars, double the recipe for more. Alternatively, this could be made using red onion, or a concoction of fruits that you have at home.
- 1 cooking apple, peeled
- 3 plums, deseeded
- 1/2 onion
- 3 generous handfuls of sultanas
- 1 orange, zest and juice
- Thumb of ginger
- 200ml Natural Umber
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
- 3 cloves
- 1 teaspoon honey
Chop the apple, plums and onion into small chunks. Add all of the ingredients to a large pan and give a good stir before bringing to a simmer. Leave for an hour or more until it becomes a sticky consistency and the liquid has been absorbed.
Leave to cool slightly before storing in sterile glass jars. Add some ribbon to the neck for a homemade gift.
Perfect served with cold cut meats or cheese.
This chutney will store well for the best part of a year. Use within a few weeks once each jar is opened.
